You could create a "Helper" position for people who want to be mods in the future. These people could just answer the questions of those who have problems with the game or are interested in something. And after the time has passed if this person worked well he can become a mod.

You have nothing stopping you from helping people right now. You can answer questions and support people with anything they need.
